A small preschool in Irvine where children ages 2–6 build, experiment, create, and figure things out — with a six children to one teacher ratio, so nobody gets lost in the crowd. Bilingual German enrichment is part of the day, and no German at home is needed.

Why the group size matters most

Half the children per teacher that the law allows

California lets a licensed preschool classroom run one teacher for every twelve children. We run six. That single number decides whether a teacher can follow what your child is curious about — or only keep everyone safe and fed.

Ratios per California Code of Regulations, Title 22, §101216.3. Our founding year runs as a licensed Family Child Care home for up to six children at a time; the planned center holds 1:6 for our youngest and no more than 1:8 for our oldest.

The fair question

So why six, and not one-to-one?

Plenty of families here could hire a nanny — even a credentialed teacher as a nanny. It's a reasonable option, so it deserves a real answer: one-to-one isn't the top of the scale. For a two- to five-year-old, it quietly removes half the curriculum.

1:1

Too small

An adult always understands you, always waits, always concedes. Warm — but a child never has to explain an idea to someone who doesn't already get it, negotiate a turn, read a friend's face, or repair a fallout. Those are skills, and they only grow between peers.

1:6

About right

Enough children for a real social world — friendships, disagreements, borrowed ideas, someone to be inspired by — and few enough that a teacher still knows exactly where each child is, what they're working on, and what they need next.

1:12

Too big

Past a certain size a teacher stops teaching and starts managing: lining up, counting heads, keeping the peace. The loud children get attention, the quiet ones get overlooked, and curiosity waits its turn.

The goal isn't the fewest children possible. It's the group size where a child is both genuinely known and genuinely challenged by the people around them.

The heart of our approach

What every SparkLab day is built on

Five things we protect fiercely — because together they turn a curious two-year-old into a capable five-year-old.

🔬

Hands-On Discovery

Ramps, magnets, water, seeds, magnifying glasses, real tools. Children ask a question, try something, watch what happens, and try again — the root of every scientific habit.

🎨

Making & Creating

Art, music, building, and pretend play with open-ended materials — where there is no one right answer, so children learn to invent their own.

🧩

Independence

We wait before we rescue. Pouring their own water, working out a disagreement, finishing the hard puzzle — competence is built one "I did it myself" at a time.

🤲

Six Children Per Teacher

Half of California's legal maximum for preschool. Small enough that we notice what a child is curious about today — and build tomorrow around it.

💛

A Happy Child Learns More

All of the above rests on a child who feels safe, known, and delighted. Joy is not the reward for learning here — it is the engine of it.

Why the early years matter

The four habits we're really building.

Nobody can tell you which jobs will exist in twenty years. But the employers surveyed for the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs research keep naming the same rising human skills — creative thinking, adaptability and resilience, curiosity and lifelong learning, and analytical problem-solving. Those aren't taught at eighteen. They're grown at three.

So we don't drill facts into children. We build the four habits underneath everything else — and every one of them grows fastest in a child who is enjoying themselves.

🧠

Figuring things out

Not being handed the answer. Trying, missing, adjusting, trying again — and discovering that a hard thing can become a done thing.

💡

Thinking of something new

Open-ended materials with no single right answer, so the child has to invent one. Original thinking is a muscle, and it starts early.

🌿

Adapting when things change

A new friend, a changed plan, a tower that falls. Flexibility and resilience are learned in small, safe doses — and we make room for them.

🔎

Staying curious

The willingness to ask one more question. It is the single trait that keeps a person learning for the rest of their life.

A bonus, not a requirement

Two languages come free with the day

Most of our families speak no German at all — and that is completely fine. German lives in our songs, stories, snack table, and seasonal celebrations, so children absorb it the way young children always have: by being around it. No test, no homework, and no expectation that anyone speaks it at home.

🙌

No German background needed

Children join at any level, at any time, and catch on through play. Nothing about the day requires a word of German from you.

🌍

Your home language belongs here

We're a multilingual room by design. Children who arrive with two or three languages at home tend to thrive in exactly this kind of environment.

German families: we are so excited you found us

Laternenfest, St. Martin, Nikolaus, Fasching — celebrate with us, and with other German-interested families beside you. We incorporate German customs, and we find ways to make Orange County connect to Germany.

We support the whole family

For parents — for the days you're at home, too

A child thrives when the household around them is steady. Parenting full-time is one of the hardest jobs there is, so this is our growing space of tools, routines, and resources that help families build calmer, more connected days — guided by the same philosophy as our classroom.

Start with a free 2-minute needs check. We'll show you where you're stretched thinnest and exactly where to begin.
