Irvine Preschool FAQ

Your Irvine preschool questions, answered

Straight answers for Irvine families: IUSD Pre-K and Kindergarten hours and enrollment dates, the TK age cutoff, California ratios, what to ask on a tour, and how to choose a preschool in Irvine, CA.

Choosing care in Irvine comes with a lot of questions — about the free public programs, what they cover, and how to pick a private preschool. Here are honest answers to the ones we hear most. Have one we haven't covered? Ask us on a tour.

When does IUSD Pre-K (TK) and Kindergarten enrollment open for 2026–27?

For the 2026–27 school year, IUSD enrollment begins March 6, 2026, with a parent information meeting hosted by each elementary school on March 5, 2026. Private preschools like SparkLab enroll on their own rolling timeline, so you can tour and reserve a seat earlier.

What is the TK / Pre-K age cutoff in California?

A child is eligible for Pre-K (formerly Transitional Kindergarten) in the year they turn 4 by September 1. It is free, optional, and has no income requirement — California has made it universal for all 4-year-olds.

Does Irvine have full-day kindergarten?

No. Irvine Unified is one of the minority of California districts that does not offer a full-day kindergarten option; Kindergarten and Pre-K both run about 3 hours 20 minutes a day. That short day is exactly why many working families add an afternoon program.

What is the difference between TK, Pre-K, and preschool?

In Irvine, "Pre-K" is the district's free public program for 4-year-olds (it replaced the name "TK"). "Preschool" usually means a private, tuition-based program for ages 2–6 with more flexible hours and its own curriculum. Many families combine free public morning Pre-K with a private afternoon program.

What questions should I ask when touring a preschool?

Ask how a typical day actually flows, the teacher-to-child ratio and group size, staff qualifications and turnover, the safety and sign-in procedures, how they communicate with parents, and how they handle settling-in and tough moments. Ask to see the space and meet the people who would care for your child.

Does SparkLab provide lunch?

Families pack lunch from home, and we eat it together at the table — calm, social, and unhurried. SparkLab provides a healthy organic snack in the morning and again in the afternoon. As a small home studio without a kitchen team we don't cook or cater meals, which also means your child eats exactly what suits their appetite, allergies and family food culture.

What are California's preschool and daycare ratios?

California licensing sets 1 caregiver per 4 infants, 1 per 6 toddlers, and 1 per 12 preschoolers. That 1:12 is a legal floor, not a quality mark — strong programs keep lower ratios, especially for the youngest children. Always ask a school its actual ratios.

How do I know a preschool is safe?

Look for secure, locked access and a sign-in/out process, background-checked staff, clear emergency and evacuation plans with regular drills, clean and child-scaled spaces, and a current California license. A good school will walk you through all of this without hesitation.

When should I start looking, and do Irvine preschools have waitlists?

Irvine is high-demand, and the best-fit programs do fill — so touring 6–12 months ahead is wise, especially for younger ages and full-day spots. For SparkLab's small first cohort, seats fill by relationship, so an early tour is the surest way in.
