"Wrap-around care" is the childcare that wraps around a short school day. In Irvine it matters more than most places, because free public Pre-K and Kindergarten end in the early afternoon. Here's how it works — and how SparkLab does it differently.
What is wrap-around care?
Wrap-around care is childcare that fills the hours a short school day doesn't cover — wrapping around the morning Pre-K or Kindergarten session so a working parent has the day covered. In Irvine that gap is real: free IUSD Pre-K and Kindergarten run only about 3 hours 20 minutes, ending in the early afternoon.
Does my child need wrap-around care after Irvine Pre-K or Kindergarten?
If both parents work, almost certainly. IUSD Pre-K (formerly TK) and Kindergarten are scheduled at roughly 200 minutes a day, and Irvine is one of the minority of California districts with no full-day kindergarten. That leaves a long afternoon to cover.
How is SparkLab's afternoon different from generic wrap-around daycare?
At most full-day centers the real curriculum is front-loaded into the morning, so an afternoon drop-off lands in unstructured time. SparkLab's Afternoon Academy is designed as its own program — German–English immersion, practical-life work, outdoor play, and projects — so the afternoon is the main event, not leftover hours.
Can my child attend free morning school and SparkLab in the afternoon?
Yes — that is exactly the model. Your child can attend free IUSD morning Pre-K or Kindergarten and come to SparkLab for a real, programmed afternoon from 1:15 through 5:45pm. You can also enroll morning-only or full-day; you pay only for the block you use.
What ages is the afternoon program for?
Children ages 2 to 6 — both little ones in free morning Pre-K or Kindergarten, and younger preschoolers whose families want an afternoon-only rhythm. We intentionally focus on early-childhood ages rather than older school-age children.
Do you coordinate with my school's release time?
Yes. We align arrival with your school's Pre-K/Kindergarten release and plan a calm transition into the afternoon. Ask us about your specific Irvine school on a tour.
