Follow the child
Learning is child-led. The adult observes closely and offers the next right challenge, instead of marching everyone through the same lesson.
Many Irvine families search for a Montessori preschool — and we admire Montessori too. But "Montessori" isn't a single, regulated thing. Here's what the philosophy really is, the parts we keep, and how Heike blends them with hands-on discovery, creative work, and whole-child warmth.
Dr. Maria Montessori spent her life observing how young children actually learn. Strip away the buzzword and a few timeless ideas remain — ones we deeply respect.
Learning is child-led. The adult observes closely and offers the next right challenge, instead of marching everyone through the same lesson.
The room itself is a "third teacher" — calm, beautiful, and ordered, with materials at a child's height that invite independent, purposeful work.
Young children soak up their world effortlessly during "sensitive periods." Meet a skill when a child is hungry for it and it blooms.
Pouring, buttoning, washing, cooking — real, hands-on work builds focus, coordination, and the quiet pride of "I can do it myself."
"Help me to do it myself." Children are treated as capable people, with freedom to choose within calm, consistent limits.
Deep, uninterrupted focus is protected. Motivation comes from the joy of the work, not stickers or grades.
Here's something many schools won't tell you: the word "Montessori" isn't trademarked or regulated. Any program can use it. So two "Montessori" preschools down the same Irvine street can feel completely different — one warm and child-led, another rigid and materials-only, a third Montessori in name alone.
So when you tour SparkLab, ask us how we do things, not just what we call them. We'll always tell you plainly.
In plain terms: SparkLab is an independent, Montessori-inspired program. We are not affiliated with, licensed by, or certified by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), the American Montessori Society (AMS), or any other Montessori organization. We use the word "Montessori" only to describe the ideas we admire and draw on.
We keep the best of Montessori and weave in play, language, nature, and warmth — so the structure to focus and the freedom to discover live side by side.
In practice, that looks like a child choosing real practical-life work in the morning, then folding it into pretend play; sensorial discovery that spills into the garden; independence held inside a warm, predictable day.
I trained my eye on Montessori's deepest gift: watching a child closely and preparing a world that lets them flourish. But real children also need to play, to move, to be sung to in two languages, and to be held when the day is big. So we blend. We keep what honors the child and add what makes a childhood joyful.

The best way to understand any preschool — Montessori or otherwise — is to feel it. Come visit, ask us anything, and watch how the children spend their day.
Book a tourSparkLab is a play-based, discovery-led preschool in Irvine that is inspired by Montessori. We keep the ideas families love most — following the child, a calm prepared environment, practical-life work, and respect for concentration — and blend them with hands-on STEM investigation, open-ended creative work, daily outdoor time, and bilingual German enrichment, all at six children per teacher. We are independent and not a certified Montessori school.
No, and we are upfront about that. SparkLab is an independent program and is not affiliated with, licensed by, or accredited by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), the American Montessori Society (AMS), or any other Montessori organization. We describe ourselves as "Montessori-inspired" because we genuinely admire and use many Montessori ideas — not to imply a certification we don't hold.
A certified Montessori school follows a specific, accredited method with trained Montessori guides and a full set of Montessori materials. "Montessori-inspired" means a program intentionally borrows Montessori principles — child-led learning, a prepared environment, independence — while blending in other elements. At SparkLab that blend includes play, two languages, nature, and a warm daily rhythm.
Because the word isn't regulated — any program can use it. Two "Montessori" preschools on the same Irvine street can feel completely different. That's why we encourage families to ask how a school actually works day to day, not just what label is on the door.
Very likely yes, if what you love is the posture behind Montessori: observing each child, trusting their drive to learn, and offering independence inside a calm, respectful environment. If you specifically need a fully accredited Montessori curriculum with the complete material sequence, we'll happily tell you so on a tour. The best way to know is to visit.
