Settling In

We will never ask you to run away.

SparkLab uses the German Eingewöhnung tradition: a parent-present, step-by-step settling-in period. No crying handoffs, no sneaking out — your child sets the pace, and you are part of the beginning.

You may know the standard American drop-off script: hand over your crying child, walk away fast, and trust that "she stops two minutes after you leave." Many loving programs run this way — but it is not the only way, and it is not our way. SparkLab settles children in the German tradition of Eingewöhnung ("getting accustomed"): gradually, gently, and with you in the room at the start.

The gentle start

How settling in works at SparkLab

1

You come together

For the first days, you and your child visit together for an hour or two. You settle into a quiet corner — coffee, laptop, book — while your child explores and a teacher slowly becomes the interesting one.

2

Short, honest goodbyes

When your child is ready — usually within the first week — we try a first short separation. Always with a real goodbye, never a disappearing act. If it is too soon, we simply slow down.

3

Your child says "you can go"

Your stays shrink as your child's confidence grows. Settling in is complete when your child accepts their teacher as a true source of comfort — and most children start waving parents off sooner than anyone expects.

Why we do it this way

Borrowed trust becomes their own

Attachment research is clear about how small children meet new places: from a secure base. With a parent quietly nearby, a child can explore, retreat for a check-in, and go out again — building a real bond with their teacher instead of having one imposed by necessity. Decades of German early-childhood practice, and the research behind the "Berlin model" of settling in, show that beginnings shaped this way are calmer for children, for parents, and for the classroom.

Our founder learned this craft first-hand in Irvine's German preschool tradition, where new families were always told some version of: "Where do you think you are going? Get comfortable — you will be staying." A settled child who loves drop-off is worth every one of those early hours.

Most children complete their settling-in within one to three weeks, with parent time front-loaded in the first days and tapering quickly. If your schedule makes a full Eingewöhnung hard, talk to us — we will design the gentlest start your family's reality allows.
